Get Rid of Mosquitoes in Your Yard by Removing Their Breeding Grounds
If you’d like to eliminate mosquitoes in your yard this summer and enjoy swimming, barbecuing, gardening and more, take action. You can help get better results and reduce the amount of spraying by doing your part to make your yard unattractive to the tiny vampires.
Mosquitoes are a major annoyance when you’re outdoors trying to enjoy the beautiful summer weather. But there are things that you can do to help reduce the mosquito population around your home. Mosquitoes need water to continue their lifecycle. Whenever water stands for four to seven days, mosquitoes have a chance of multiplying. Even the smallest amount of standing water can allow these tiny flying vampires to flourish.
The single most important action you can take is to eliminate their breeding sites.
Make sure to check all of these common areas where water tends to collect:
Clogged gutters allow water to back up and sit for days without anyone knowing it’s there. Check your gutters often to make sure they are flowing freely. Because gutters are out of sight, this is one area homeowners tend to forget to check.
2. Outdoor Faucets
Even a slow drip can create a puddle ideal for mosquito eggs to grow. Make sure all outdoor faucets are drip free.
3. Outdoor AC Unit
Your condenser unit can leak water too. Don’t forget to check it too. Call a heating and cooling professional if you notice water leaking from your outdoor unit.
Watering cans, flower pots, kids toys, etc. can all collect water when it rains. If you find any containers outside, either move them inside or turn them upside down so the rain can’t collect inside.
Check after you water and adjust your sprinklers to make sure you are not over watering and leaving standing water.
6. Kiddie Pools & Bird Baths
Change the water at least once a week in these vessels to make sure they are larvae free.
7. Tree Stumps
Trees and tree stumps are another area homeowners tend to overlook. If you have a tree with a hole in the trunk or an old stump, rainwater can collect and stay in these for weeks at a time. Fill the holes or remove the stumps to prevent this.
Clean your pool often and use chlorine. Most pool owners do those things. But pool covers are notorious for holding small puddles of water. Make sure your cover fits tight with no low spots that can collect rainwater. Check it often and remove any standing water.
While ponds are the definition of standing water, you can stock them with mosquito-eating fish like goldfish, guppies and the western mosquitofish. Aerating ponds also keeps the water moving so mosquitoes can’t lay eggs. We can also provide a biological control through our Eco-Pride system that eliminates mosquito larvae without harming fish or plants.
